Laptop Recommendations

We receive many phone calls from incoming students asking which notebook computer they should purchase. We've assembled some helpful information below.

What brand of computer should I purchase? A Dell notebook computer is the most popular choice for our undergraduate and graduate students There are many different models? Which one is right for me?

Dell currently maintains several different lines of computer systems. The Inspiron, Vostro, XPS, Latitude, and Precision are all current models.  They also have a "Mini" line of netbooks and a new model called the Adamo.

The Latitude is Dell's "Corporate Solution". This has traditionally meant that it is their most stable platform. To achieve this, the systems sometimes lack the newest features and are more expensive. This system is recommended by the MBA department for their students. It is also the system recommended for C&BA faculty and staff.

The XPS is aimed at the consumer market and typically a showcase for cutting edge technology. These feature rich systems are available in a wide range of styles and price points. In theory, these ever changing systems could be a little less stable than the Latitude. However, the XPS is the most popular system among students.

What model do you recommend?

We have four recommendations - The Latitude E6400, the Latitude E4300, the Studio XPS 13, or the Studio XPS 16.  The XPS 13 model is very popular among students because it is fairly small but is packed with the latest available technology.

The best piece of advice for purchasing a notebook computer is to spend as much as you can afford. You should focus your spending on the fastest processor, the most memory, and the largest hard drive. Spending money to upgrade the video card will also pay off in better performance
